Introduction

The modern theory of the atom provides deep insights into many properties of matter. Exactly how are atoms held together in a solid? Why do metals conduct electricity but other solids do not? Why do some substances dissolve only in water and others dissolve only in liquids like alcohol or gasoline? In this chapter we shall look into the answers to these questions and others like them.
