Welcome to NURIEC!

The Regional Interpreter Education Center at Northeastern University (NURIEC) is funded by the Interpreter Training Program grant from the US Department of Education Rehabilitation Services Administration.

In collaboration with five sister grantee centers, NURIEC goals are:

  1. Increase the number, diversity, and work-readiness of new interpreters.
  2. Move novice interpreters more quickly toward initial credentials.
  3. Improve and expand the practices of working interpreters in areas of greatest need.
  4. Enhance effectiveness of interpreter utilization by VR service providers and their consumers.
  5. Provide easily accessible information, resources, and technical assistance, including opportunities for certification testing and maintenance.

Ten states and territories comprise the NURIEC region: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Vermont.

Coordinated by a National Interpreter Education Center (NIEC), the five regional centers are NURIEC at Northeastern University, CATIE Center at St. Catherine University, GURIEC at Gallaudet University, MARIE Center at University of Northern Colorado DOIT Center, WRIEC at El Camino College and Western Oregon University. Together, the six centers form the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers (NCIEC).

U.S. Department of Education Rehabilitation Services Administration grants have supported education for sign language interpreters for nearly three decades. In the previous grant cycle, 2005-2010, the NCIEC worked to build effective practice foundations for interpreting education.
